WNO CELEBRATES 70 YEARS IN 2026

A New Chapter Begins

Every great city has a great opera company, and this has been the case for D.C. since the Opera Society of Washington was founded in 1956. As the Opera Society evolved in scope and scale over 70 years to become the Washington National Opera, WNO remains a cultural cornerstone of D.C. civic life. Our longevity and success are thanks to a loyal and generous community of opera-goers and supporters.

Now, as we embark on our 70th anniversary year, WNO begins a new chapter.  Read more about our plans as we celebrate this extraordinary milestone.

With Gratitude

We are deeply grateful to the artists, staff, board, audiences, and the entire WNO community whose unwavering support has made it possible for Washington National Opera to thrive for the past 70 years. Their belief in our mission has helped us realize a remarkable record of artistic excellence and fiscal responsibility. As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, we do so with great hope for our next 70 years—and beyond.
